Shrub. Stem 1.0–1.5 m long, ascending to erect, branching from base; sometimes acualescent, rosettes suckering to form dense clumps, rarely solitary; with persistent dried leaves. Leaves 2-ranked in young plants, densely rosulate when mature, spreading and strongly recurved, dark green or grey-green, often tinged reddish or mauve during dry season, texture smooth, lanceolate-attenuate, canaliculate, 40–60 cm long, 9–11 cm wide; margins cartilaginous, with brown-tipped teeth, 3–5 mm long, 0.70–0.14 mm apart. Inflorescence up to 1.2 m high, erect, 5–20-branched from above middle, lowest branches sometimes rebranched. Racemes cylindrical, 6–15 cm long, lax. Floral bracts 4–5 mm long, 2.0–2.5 mm wide. Pedicels 9–10 mm long. Flowers: perianth orange to red, 27–28 mm long, 6.5–7.0 mm diameter, narrowed above ovary, base truncate, cylindrical to subclavate, trigonous; outer segments free for 8–11 mm; stamens and style slightly exserted. Fruit a capsule.
